OBS Studio is a handy open source tool for recording videos and live streams. Although it is a professional program, it is inevitable that you will encounter common problems when using it.
For example, when you try to press the “Start Recording” button to start recording a video, you may encounter an OBS error with the “Output could not be started” window. Please check the logs for more details.” Is it an unsolvable bug? Don't worry. In this tutorial, we present 4 methods to solve this problem.
Why OBS could not start output?
OBS needs a video encoder to convert the video signals and compress the information reducing its size. Generally, OBS automatically supports the encoder installed on your computer. If an incorrect codec has been chosen, the message “output could not be started” appears, stopping recording. In this case, you have to adjust the settings manually.
Solution 1. Reinstall OBS Studio
Reinstalling programs is always considered as a universal solution, because this helps to restore default settings and possibly fix errors.
Therefore, uninstall the OBS program and reinstall it again to see if you can start recording, if not, read on and find other ways.
Solution 2. Update the graphics card drivers
In the pop-up window, we can also see the following advice: “If you are using NVENC or AMD encoders, make sure your video drivers are up to date.”
That is, you must download the latest version of the graphics driver from its official site, so that the drivers can support OBS encoding. If you have got the codecs updated, but still can't start recording, try adjusting the software settings with the following method.
Solution 3. Reset OBS Settings
Since NVIDIA or AMD encoders are not available for some reason, you can select the rest “x264” encoder. It is a very common codec that is used by most screen recorders and offers good video output without any additional hardware.
Step 1. Open OBS Studio. Press “File” in the top bar and select “Settings.”
Step 2. Click “Exit”. Next, choose “Software (x264)” as the encoder in the “Broadcast” section.
Step 3. Click “Apply” and then “OK”. Then restart the program just in case.
